Printworks Bradford

Case Study – Printworks Bradford

We were proud to be involved in the transformation of a historic site in Bradford into a modern residential community. The Printworks, was phase two of three in the Sharp’s Card Factory development. It is set to deliver high-quality living spaces while preserving the iconic character of the Art Deco style Grade II listed building ‘Sharps Card Factory’.

Project Overview

The development is strategically positioned between the well-established residential suburbs of outer Bradford and the thriving Airedale towns and villages. The completed phase will consist of 137 thoughtfully designed apartments spread across three floors, arranged around a central communal courtyard. This layout promotes a sense of community while providing modern, functional living spaces.

Phase one of the project ‘Card House’ saw the redevelopment of the existing Grade II listed building into 144 new residential units . The external fabric of the building remained unchanged, with the exception being an additional storey added. This was set back from the line of the main elevations and was designed in an art deco style to complement the existing building.

Phase two, ‘Printworks’ will see the demolition of some of the newer factory buildings. A three storey building comprising 137 units will be built in its footprint. Like the new storey in phase 1, this building has been designed in the same style as the original card factory.
The new buildings for the Printworks were constructed using timber frames. This can speed up the construction process. In this case, this was further improved as some elements were manufactured offsite. Timber framed buildings also help improve energy efficiency.

The third and final phase, Greetings House will deliver 104 apartments and 4 town houses. This is expected to commence in early 2026.

Historical Significance

The site holds a rich history, originally constructed in 1936 as the headquarters for W N Sharpe, a highly successful printing business and one of the foremost printers of Christmas and birthday cards across the country. During World War II, the company was forced to move out when Air Ministry requisitioned the factory. However, once the war (and paper rationing) ended, business boomed and the site was expanded.

In 1984, Hallmark Cards recognized the site’s value and acquired W N Sharpe’s operations for nearly £21 million, cementing its legacy in Bradford’s industrial history.

Due to the historical significance, a heritage statement was produced. This included information about the origins, chronological development and architectural character of the Grade II listed former Sharps Card Factory.

By converting this landmark into a contemporary residential development, we are not only preserving its historical significance but also creating a thriving, sustainable community for future generations.
