The redevelopment of Coltran Mill in Mexborough involves the transformation of a derelict historic flour mill into modern housing. This project will see the mill converted into 60 luxury one and two bedroom apartments alongside the construction of 26 houses and enhanced communal spaces including the canal side walkway.
The mill complex, originally known as ‘The Don Flour Mills’ and later the ‘Don Roller Mill’, was built in the 1860s by James White. The mill complex was extended in 1884 and James’ son Frederick took over the business. The mill then formed part of the Barnsley British Cooperative Society from 1914, until the mill ceased production in 1972. Towards the end of the 20th century the mill site was then occupied by the company ‘Coltran Products Ltd’, who manufactured and coated steel wire and tube products in plastic and epoxy paint finishes. They vacated the mill in 2012 and the mill fell into disrepair, making this an essential project for heritage preservation and local housing needs.
As often is the case with heritage projects, it was important that the redevelopment retained the mill’s historical value whilst integrating modern features. We worked closely with heritage and planning experts to maintain the mill’s iconic water tower. Throughout the project, sensitivity to the site’s historical significance was paramount, requiring extensive collaboration with local authorities, the Canals and River Trust and heritage specialists to ensure an appropriate design and execution.
This complex project reflects the developer’s commitment to balancing heritage conservation with modern development, ensuring a successful outcome for all stakeholders.
